What Is Mold and How Can I Find It?
Mold is a type of fungus that sprouts from spores found in the air, often forming in areas with dark and damp conditions like bathrooms, basements, around windows, or attics and roofs, where a leak has sprung. Mold can grow on a wide variety of materials ranging from paper products like wallpaper, dust, cardboard, wood, carpet and fabrics.
Some common types of mold found throughout homes are:
- Aspergillosis: This form of mold is a yellow-green color, often found growing on food or growing throughout the ducts of your air conditioning system.
- Cladosporium: Looking like a green or black pepper substance, this mold is often found on the back of toilets, fiberglass air ducts, wood surfaces, carpets and fabrics.
- Stachybotrys Atra (Black Mold): Most homeowners have likely heard of this type — black mold is black and often found throughout ducts and pipes and can cause serious health effects like asthma, respiratory issues and fatigue.
If you can’t visibly see colorful mold growing on your walls, floors and ceilings, you can often detect mold by its musty and stale smell or by telltale health effects, including skin irritation, respiratory problems and asthma, headaches and nausea.
Why Is Mold Remediation Important?
If you find signs of mold throughout your home, is it really necessary to have it removed right away? Even if you don’t experience any immediate, negative health effects associated with mold growth, it’s crucial to have it removed to avoid causing extensive property damage and prevent the potential for hazards.
If untreated, negative health effects will persist, leading to sleep loss and irritability, fatigue, headaches, nausea, respiratory issues and weakened immune systems.
How Do You Remove Mold?
When there’s mold in your home, you can’t just take a scrub brush and some bleach to remove mold (BLEACH DOES NOT KILL MOLD) — for complete eradication, you need the help of trained and knowledgeable professionals with industrial-quality equipment. In New York – Article 32 of the Labor Law requires a professional Mold Assessor to first inspect the home and provide a scope of work before any remediation company can take the necessary steps such pre-cleaning the area appropriately, constructing containment areas, use the highest-quality, state-of-the-art tools for complete and effective removal, properly dispose of contaminated materials. The assessor would then perform a clearance test.
At Haven Property Solutions, our expertly trained team uses proven scientific technology and equipment to eliminate and prevent mold from recurring in your home. We offer up to 30-year warrantees. We understand various removal techniques and understand that different materials require a specialized approach. While working to remove mold in your home, we take great care to preserve your structure and avoid causing any damages.
What is Article 32 of the Labor Law?
Effective Jan. 1, 2016, under Article 32 of the Labor Law, individuals or companies that call themselves out as mold “remediation” contractors or mold “assessors” must be (1) registered with the Department of Labor; (2) complete training and education courses; and (3) provide minimum work standards when they enter into contractual work for remediation of existing mold. It is unlawful for any person or company to engage, advertise or hold themselves out as a mold assessor, a mold remediation contractor / company, or even an abatement worker unless they have a valid license issued by the Commissioner of the Department of Labor.
Initially, a licensed mold “assessor” must be hired in order to perform the initial mold assessment, testing or visual site inspection (in clear cases of contamination) to determine whether or not there is mold at a property.
Once the licensed mold assessor determines that there is mold at the premises, the law then requires that a separate mold “remediation” contractor be hired to remove and/or remediate the mold issue.
